Are You Being Real? Authentic vs. AI

Our current time calls for us to be more authentic than ever before.  However, AI’s (artificial intelligence) movement pushes us into the opposite direction.  We are asking science (computer science) to create an acceptable version of us. In documenting a case against AI or Virtual Headshots, this type of photography misses the mark in the following ways:

Lack of Personalization: AI / Virtual headshots lack the personalization that comes from working with a professional photographer who can help bring out an individual's unique personality and character. This results in headshots that look generic and impersonal.

Limited Context: AI / Virtual headshots lack the context that comes from a professional photoshoot, such as the background, lighting, and other visual elements. As a result, virtual headshots look flat and lack the depth and richness that comes from a more detailed and nuanced image.

Over-editing: AI / Virtual headshots may be edited or retouched to a degree that makes them look unnatural, which makes them appear less authentic. This can include smoothing out skin texture or erasing imperfections that are a natural part of an individual's appearance. In some cases, the editing goes way too far and alters the actual features of the individual.

Lack of Trustworthiness: AI / Virtual headshots may be seen as less trustworthy than professional headshots because they can be manipulated or edited more easily, which raises concerns about authenticity.

Overall, while virtual headshots can be a practical and cost-effective solution for some companies, they may not always be the best choice for creating authentic and personalized images of employees. In a period when authenticity (Being Real) is more important now more than ever before, authenticity fosters connection between people. When we’re authentic, we’re more likely to connect with others on a deeper level which leads into creating meaningful relationships based on mutual understanding and respect.
